Jesus said the Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.

It is interesting what Jesus found to be a compelling vision. He could have said “we are going to take this city for God” or “Let us praise God until we can sing no more”. Instead he challenges people’s discipleship in regards to justice, freedom and vision. Sometimes I find myself looking for a vision or casting a vision that is from God but is simply not encompassing enough. It simply doesn’t have enough transformational, paradigm shifting or confrontation about it.

I WONDER WHY?

Often we capture a watered down vision because we survive from crisis to crisis. Falling from Sunday to Sunday, living in an era of safety rather than adventure. In effect we operate on a vision of the future that is based on fear and immediacy. We don’t project or live in a vision that is full of promise, opportunity and the ridiculously impossible made possible through God.

Notice how Jesus says “the Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me….” Jesus looks at the challenges ahead and takes them on. He claims victory before he begins. In ministry and life it is easy to act defeated before you begin. I wonder what Jesus would say to you in the face of emerging challenges? Just maybe he would say “come on the Spirit of God is upon, run that race, face your fears, live in a vision of Godly possibility, have a good go at it, take a shot and then take another one – it might surprise you when the goals you begin to score for God are beyond anything you might think or imagine!”

History is full of great achievers and communities who didn’t know what wasn’t possible. Who cares if you don’t score on the the first shot. The important thing is that you continue to have a compelling vision worth pursuing and keep having a crack at it. The next goal might be just around the corner.

Keep it real
